Debarshi Mustafi, MD, PhD, graduated from University of Chicago with honors in chemistry, then earned his MD and PhD degrees from Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Mustafi completed his PhD thesis in the laboratory of Krzysztof Palczewski, PhD, and received a doctoral excellence award for his dissertation, which focused on understanding the genetic signatures of the retina in health and disease. He completed a medicine preliminary year internship at University Hospitals-Case Medical Center and then moved to the west coast to complete his ophthalmology residency at the University of Southern California/LA County program. During his residency he further developed his interest to use genetic approaches to treat retinal diseases and is currently completing his retina fellowship at the University of Washington. He has been recognized with national awards from the Retina Research Foundation, the Gordon Research Conference on Genomics and the Microscopy Society of America. He was recently inducted as a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation fellow.
