Biography

Dr. Mekonnen was born in Metairie, Louisiana and raised in the greater Los Angeles suburb of Chino, CA. She headed up north for her undergraduate studies to attend Stanford University and graduated with a BA in Human Biology. During her gap years, she worked in a translational research laboratory at the University of California (UC) San Francisco studying asthma and airway diseases where she became interested in academic medicine.

She stayed in San Francisco for medical school, completing a specialized dual degree MD/MS program at UC San Francisco/UC Berkeley and discovering her passion for ophthalmology and health equity research. Dr. Mekonnen is thrilled to move further north to Seattle to complete her internship in Internal Medicine and Ophthalmology training at the University of Washington. In her free time, she enjoys exploring nature, traveling, reading, crafting hair products, and trying new coffee spots.
