Philanthropy spotlight: Jack and Pam Jolley establish flexible funding for ophthalmology research

In an effort to accelerate groundbreaking advancements in ophthalmology, grateful patients and former Community Action Board members Jack and Pam Jolley have established a unique funding initiative designed to provide immediate financial support to early-stage research. The Jolley Fellowship aims to fill a critical gap in medical funding by ensuring that researchers have access to resources at pivotal moments, allowing them to continue their work without delays.

The inspiration behind this initiative stemmed from the Jolley’s understanding of the challenges researchers face in seeking long-term funding. “Our goal was to create a flexible funding source that could be accessed as needed, ensuring that promising discoveries aren’t stalled due to financial constraints,” Jack and Pam explained. By offering financial support at crucial junctures, the fellowship allows research to progress swiftly until larger-scale funding can be secured.

In collaboration with leadership in Ophthalmology and Advancement, the Jolleys structured the fellowship to be adaptable, ensuring it remains relevant for current and future research efforts. The initiative is expected to benefit not only the local community but also broader populations by enabling medical breakthroughs that have the potential to transform vision care.

This strategic approach to funding is poised to make a lasting impact, providing researchers like Assistant Professor Chris Fortenbach, MD, PhD, the inaugural fellowship holder, with the resources needed to advance innovations in ophthalmology. Fortenbach's lab is investigating the therapeutic potential of photoswitches to restore vision in degenerated retinas. Thanks to the support of the Jolleys, the future of vision research is poised for significant advancements.
