Todd Margolis, PhD, MD, has joined the UW Department of Ophthalmology faculty as a Professor of Clinical Practice. He will be seeing patients in the Eye Institute at Harborview.
Dr. Margolis specializes in diagnosing and managing infectious and inflammatory eye disease, with a particular interest in herpes virus-related eye disease, ocular graft-versus-host disease, ocular pain and ocular infections in immunocompromised patients.
His research focuses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate the establishment and maintenance of latent neuronal infection with herpes simplex virus (HSV). His research also focuses on low-cost screening of individuals at risk for blinding retinal disease and the role of the ocular microbiome in ocular graft-versus-host disease.
Dr. Margolis is a graduate of Stanford University and the UCSF MSTP, completing his PhD in Neuroscience. After a residency in Ophthalmology and a clinical fellowship in Corneal and External Diseases, he completed postdoctoral training in viral pathogenesis at UCLA.
Dr. Margolis joined the faculty at UCSF as a clinician scientist in 1991, attaining the positions of Professor, Rose Williams Chair for Research in Corneal Disease, and Director of the F.I. Proctor Foundation in 2000. In 2014, he moved to become Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM). He has served as the president of the ARVO and on the National Eye Advisory Council of the National Eye Institute.
In his free time, Dr. Margolis enjoys cooking and learning new cooking techniques.
